This is an update from Fri 22 Apr. I had a friend over and we baked goodies all evening and talked until past midnight, so I didn't get to do my usual observations.
Biggest news: TRUE LEAVES HAVE STARTED SHOWING!!!
What are True Leaves?
When a plant emerges from seed, it puts out a set of "seed leaves" called cotyledons. Their purpose is either A) to push up to the light to begin photosynthesis; or B) a plant-food storage that remains below the soil. Cotyledons already exist inside the seed, whereas "true" leaves are formed after germination. Often, cotyledons have completely different shape and characteristics from true leaves.
Some seedlings with true leaves beginning to emerge:
Zucchini
Butternut (the rear-most plant, not the two nearer, smaller ones).
Agastache
Marigold
Chamomile and Tarragon (they look so similar, I forget which is which)
Tomatoes
Broccoli
Some tomatoes (or cherry tomatoes)
Other seedlings:
Oregano
Basil - Purple and Genovese
Tomatoes (all of them)
NEW GROWTH
Cosmos - Early Spring Sensation
Aster: I'm still confused about it's shape...
Bee Balm: suffered greatly from the mysterious white fuzz...
NEW GROWTH: Chamomile! ...or Tarragon...
Sage
Calendula
The squashes had gotten so big, I moved them to another tray.
Right: Zucchini and three Butternut plants. You can just see the butternut's true leaves beginning to poke out.
The zucchini are huge!!
I'm trying this arrangement to make sure everything gets enough light...
